Set in the later years of Conan’s life, after he has famously become king by his own hand, the game centers around the fragile state of Conan’s rule in Aquilonia. Surrounded by enemies and hostile nations, Conan’s rule hangs by a thread and in the end, it’s up to players, either singly or backed by their guilds to turn the tide for or against the embattled king.

Massively Multiplayer Gaming for the Adult Player
One of the most highly anticipated MMORPGs in recent years due to the strength and familiarity of the Conan franchise across a variety of major media, Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures is the first of several releases planned for the franchise, all of which are aimed at an adult audience. Firmly rooted in the savage, bloody, violent and sexy Hyborian universe, players can expect a graphically beautiful game blended with gritty gameplay that is true to both the barbarian hero from Howard’s writings and the Schwarzenegger influenced version from books, movies and comics.

Available Cultures and Classes
Although Age of Conan contains a wide range of peoples, its playable cultures are currently limited to Aquilonians, Cimmerians, and Stygians. Within each of these players can choose from a selection of archetypal character classes, although available classes and subsequent subclasses are not necessarily the same within each culture. For example, archetypal classes for Aquilonians and Cimmerians are Rogue, Priest and Soldier, while Stygians are represented by Rogue, Priest and Mage. Further differences exist within subclasses for each. See the basic breakdown of all three cultures below:

Aquilonians: Internally divided, but united against their barbarian neighbors, the Aquilonians live lives on the edge. Their kingdom, with its prosperous cities, enlightened culture and religious freedom, is known as the "Flower of the West." Yet for all this and despite the power of King, Conan I, it is a land where culture clashes and unrest are always a threat.

Cimmerians: As the Hyborian Age comes to an end the northern barbarian clans of the Cimmerians know that the end of their time is drawing near too. King Conan I of Aquilonia is himself a Cimmerian, though not typical of his people. Although his life has been filled with wanderlust, his Kin care nothing for what occurs outside their clan territories.

Stygians: Masters of the magical arts and ruled by their consuming worship of the serpent-god Set, the Stygians excel at occult and diabolic lore. They learned long ago that true power lies in knowledge and in pacts with dark powers. This single-mindedness has allowed them become the only culture to harness the secrets of the Mage class and power that comes with it.

Modes Singleplayer as well as Multiplayer
Unlike most MMORPGs, Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures includes a significant singleplayer experience as well as deep overarching multiplayer gameplay. This is an atypical MMORPG feature, but one that has a purpose. Players enter the game as a lowly galley slave with no memory of his/her past, and over the first five to 20 levels of singleplayer action build the skills necessary to survive in the game's multiplayer levels. During this time you will traverse a variety of rich environments including jungles, deserts, mountains, valleys, dungeons and cities packed with NPCs, beasts and monsters, before eventually leveling up and moving back to your chosen culture’s homeland. Because the only character-related choices that players have to make at the game’s opening are their looks, clothing and culture, this singleplayer mode is important in deciding what class and subclass to pursue and thus the level of impact your character will have in greater multiplayer portions of the game.

In-game levels 20 and above are strictly multiplayer. 20-40 introduce players to guilds. 40-60 deal with large scale combat. 60-80 have the player interacting with King Conan and levels 80 and up represent end-game play. Here gameplay changes as social aspects of MMORPG gameplay take over on a large scale.

Real-time Combat That Takes Queues from the FPS
Traditionally MMORPGs have utilized a mix of auto and turn-based functionality in their combat systems, but Age of Conan dispenses with that, instead drawing inspiration from FPS/action games. Firmly rooted in the brutality of the Hyborian universe, game developer Funcom has devised an action-based system that not only provides the sense of actually being in the fight, but also requires the player to participate in it. That means no simple targeted attacks. Players can attack and defend from nearly any position in real-time, whether on the ground or atop a mount, while standing still or on the move. It’s a recipe for carnage and one that fits right into the world of Conan.

The combat system in Age of Conan comes in three forms: drunken brawling, mini games like CTF and massive Player vs. Player battles, which lets you engage in siege combat to defend or attack a city. All are easy to learn, but difficult to master, providing hours worth of play and replay value and are the core of this new cutting edge MMORPG.

Reviews summary: crap
Comment reviews: No free 30 days without handing over credit card first, and they don't accept Discover. I'm not giving a company my ATM card that seems to think they can trick 14 bucks out of my pocket... what are they a porn site? Let people sign up, then force them to start playing on paying basis. Sorry, game looks great but crappy account management means I immediately uninstalled it, giving it to a friend. Maybe they'll give it a good review, this seriously pissed me off.

Reviews summary: Not worth your time....
Comment reviews: Maybe its me but all MMO's lately seem to be the exact same but this game is HORRIBLE! I was in the beta and was pretty excited about it honestly. I bought it when it came out and played it quite a bit. The crafting sucks, the social sucks, huge bugs(which is to be expected when something is released.) and the worst part....3 months after release the design crew has systematically destroyed this game. More things are broken now than at release. I was very disappointed. If you want something fun and solid with good crafting with hardly any bugs I would try LOTRO

Reviews summary: Biggest grinder ever made. All the items look the same. Creative use of maybe a total of 20 total armor sets in marketing.
Comment reviews: The conent in this game literally runs out at points and you have to aimlessly grind mobs to level.

With dwindiling numbers on most all servers, finding groups for end zone quest lines is completely impossible. And the 1-80 levelling experience is absolutely dependant on these quests for experience points.

SO you end up having to repeat "villas" (can you say badge runs, only they start at low level, 5 tiny instances that all look the exact same, with boring goals such as "collect valuables in villa verde"). This will get you a 5th of a level every 6 hours on a timer.

OR you can mindless kill random mobs at 1000 experience each, for a total of 1.3 million to level, you do the math on the kills needed for that.

The armor is blatant false advertising.

Think world of warcraft, level 1-10 armor sets, with different stats at level 80.

TERRIBLE weapons and armor selection.

For former warcraft players, I will give you an idea of the games size, think elwyn, westfall, duskwood, redridge, felwood, and blasted lands.

Thats how small it is, about perhaps half of one wow continent.

They try to disguise this with lengthy zone in and zone out load screens.

Mounted travel, is around the same speed as running on foot.

Mounted combat, doesn't allow for use of abilities, only standard weapon swings, which are very weak attacks and meaningless in pvp, players regenerate health faster than normal swings take it away one must use combos to kill an opponent, and cannot on a mount.

Can't recommend this at all, boring, buggy and no rewards worth the play.

Reviews summary: Graphics and Gameplay
Comment reviews: Just a normal person I am. Not a professional at this at all on reviews.
I do really like this game a lot. After the very long install and all the updates I jumped right in and chose my character who was a Guardian. Very fun and strong character to play for a new player wanting to kick some tooshy when starting out. The game control is very fun and I love the new styles of attacks and all too. The graphics are just downright beautiful and everyone that I have played with on there has been very fun and friendly.
The only down side I have to this game is merely just technical. The forums prove it too. You can go into the forums and read the plethora of gripes and complaints on everyones issues. I won't go into great detail other than saying that the imaging stuttered on my screen during game play. Needless to say I tried everything that anyone offered to resolve it and ended up canceling my account in less than a month of game play. The game has many bugs and still needs a lot of work. There have been many people buying newer systems thinking it would resolve the issue and they are still having problems.
If you really want to play this game try the trial before you buy it just to be sure it is for you. Again it is a fun game and beautiful graphics. I've only suspended my account until I know everything is finally out of the beta stage and fully finished and working fine without as many complaints.
I do hope this helped someone out there. Good luck on your gaming adventures.

Just wanted to update my notes here. Would rate it 4 stars now. I recently built a new PC and now the game plays flawless. Have not ran into any technical difficulties yet. Not saying to get the exact same specifications on your computer that I have. But this is what I built:

EVGA nForce 680i SLI mobo
EVGA nvidia GeForce GTX 260 graphics
2 Gigs DDR2 6400 memory
700 Watt Power Supply (of course)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Processor

Reviews summary: AOC - MMORPG Disaster
Comment reviews: AOC is the worst MMORPG I've have ever played in terms of the following items, in order or severity:

1) MASSIVE memory leak issue leading to constant lag by all but those that have way more processing power than required for the game.
2) Inability or refusal of Funcom (maker of AOC) to deal with the massive memory leak issue, instead focusing on ridiculous items to fix each week.
3) Horrible and lengthly list of game bugs, many many quests are broken, items don't work, crafting system in shambles.
4) PvP completely non-functional. "PvP" servers should be renamed "ganking" & PvE servers should be renamed "non-ganking" since this is the ONLY difference between the 2 types. The only PvP system that works is a premade scenario that is initiated and completed manually by someone advertising constantly in open chat for people to please join a premade group. If you enter a pug que for pvp minigames you can wait 9 hours or more for your turn.
5) Serious lack of raid content at game end. I hear lvl 80's all the time advertising "looking for anything to do" - desperation has set in.
6) Major patches occuring once a week now (at game release they had to have two patches a week). Most patches require more patches to fix the poorly thought out patches.
7) RAPIDLY declining membership to AOC make group play all but impossible.
8) Appears the beta testers were as drunk AND stupid as the game designers.
9) No auto-attack style or "Stick" command places melee class characters at a SEVERE disadvantage to casting type classes. Melee chain combos are extremely difficult to make work in a pvp situation.
10) Even the AOC core "fan boys" have been silent lately with the non-stop complaints about the severe problems with AOC being expressed daily in open channel chat.

Save yourself a headache and go outside and enjoy the real world for the next month while we await the release of Warhammer, since there is nothing worth a crap out there currently in the MMORPG world to play in......
